IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it will look after redevelopment next year.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
SOUTHWEST AIRPORT
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The two plans illustrate how a site of an airport is going to change after the redevlopement next year and how it is now.
Overall, the diagrams show that now there is no amenities in ther airport that is why they are going to redevlope it next year by adding some amenities on what is already there.
The airport now is simple with 2 entrances one for the departures and one for the arrivals separated by a wall, in the departures side there a cafeteria and the check-in corner stright ahead there are the security passport control, on the arrivals side there s nothing between it and the passport control custums not like the other side, after that the two sides meets in rectangular shaped area with 2 walks away surrounded by 8 gates.
The airport will containe so many new amenities after the redlopement next year, from the plan we can see that they added a portal in the 2 sides, in the arrivals side they moved the cafeteria to the weast south replaced it by the check-in corner, and in the old check in area there will be bag drop place, in the departures side they aded a cafeteria in the west and next to it an ATM , and some space to the car hire , passing the passport control custums they wont added anything however in security passport control they added some shops , then so many gates qnd 2

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main change—the airport will gain facilities and a larger gate area—and compare the current and future layouts. You also mention useful details such as the existing departures and arrivals entrances and the future bag-drop and car-hire areas. However, the overview is inaccurate: saying there are “no amenities” now overlooks the current café and check-in counter. Several locations are also confused, including the future café and ATM, which are described as being on the departures side rather than in arrivals. The response ends abruptly at “2,” leaving the future concourse and sky train incompletely reported. Select the major changes accurately, then give a clear overview and complete the comparison of the two plans.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the current and planned layouts. This gives the reader some sense of progression, and phrases such as “Overall” and “after that” help connect information. However, the long third and fourth paragraphs combine many locations and changes in single sentences, making relationships difficult to follow. Some linking is also unclear, as in “in the departures side” followed by details that belong to arrivals. The final sentence is unfinished, so the description does not reach a clear conclusion. Use shorter, organised sentences and group details by area—for example, departures, arrivals, then the concourse—to make the comparison easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “entrances,” “passport control,” “bag drop,” “gates,” and “car hire.” These terms show an attempt to report specific airport features. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the description difficult to understand, such as “redevlopement,” “custums,” “walks away,” and “portal.” Some expressions are also imprecise: “so many new amenities” does not identify the changes, while “the two sides meets” is not a natural way to describe the layout. Aim for accurate map vocabulary and precise location phrases, such as “the concourse branches into two arms” or “the café is on the upper-right wall.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to combine ideas using clauses and sequencing, for example, “after that the two sides meets in rectangular shaped area.” However, sentence structures are often faulty, and errors frequently make the layout harder to interpret. Examples include “there is no amenities,” “the two sides meets,” and “they wont added anything,” which show problems with agreement, plurals, and verb forms. Several sentences run on without clear punctuation, particularly the descriptions beginning “The airport now is simple” and “The airport will containe.” There is some use of present and future forms, but control is inconsistent. Practise writing one clear sentence for each area, checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and the correct form after modal verbs.
