Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Anand,

How are you? I am writing this letter to inform you that I am planning to make a business trip to you city for few days.

I wanted to start a business in your city and I like to enquire about a suitable place to begin it. Therefore, i would like to make a business trip to chosen city. I will be staying there about 5 days. First three days i will be busy with meetings concerning my upcoming business sectore, but remaining 2 days, i would like to go for sightseeing.

Could please suggest me some breathkaing and refreshing locations to explore? Something that is worth watching in your place. I would like to invite you to join me for a dinner so that we can spend sometime together and refresh ourselves.

I am hoping to meet you as early as possible. If you need any information regarding my stay, please let me know. Thank you

Best Wishes

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requirements: you explain that the trip is for starting a business, ask for sightseeing recommendations, and invite your friend to dinner. The practical detail that you will be busy for the first three days and free for the remaining two helps make the purpose clear. The request for places to visit is relevant, but “Something that is worth watching in your place” is vague; naming the kinds of attractions you enjoy would make the request more specific. The dinner invitation is clear, though it could be developed by suggesting a day or asking when your friend is available. These details would make the ideas more fully developed and personal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the trip, explain its business purpose and schedule, then ask about sightseeing and invite your friend to dinner. Paragraph breaks also help distinguish these stages. Linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “but” show how some ideas relate, although “Therefore” repeats the reason for the trip rather than advancing the message, and the transition from the sightseeing question to the invitation is abrupt. The closing adds a polite final note, but “Thank you” feels slightly disconnected from the preceding sentences. More natural transitions and clearer links between related details would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “business trip,” “meetings,” “sightseeing,” and “invite you to join me for a dinner.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “refreshing locations,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. “Breathkaing” is misspelled, “business sectore” is not the appropriate expression, and “worth watching” is an awkward way to describe places to visit. The phrase “chosen city” is also unclear because the city is already known to your friend. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding descriptive words that do not fit the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and longer structures, for example, “First three days I will be busy with meetings … but remaining 2 days, I would like to go for sightseeing.” This shows an attempt to connect ideas, and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur: “you city” should be “your city,” “I like to enquire” does not fit the intended tense, and “Could please suggest me” is missing a subject and uses an incorrect verb pattern. Articles and prepositions also need attention in phrases such as “for few days” and “for a dinner.” More accurate sentence patterns and careful proofreading would improve control.
