Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Misha,

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I am writing this letter to let you know that I am attending an annual business meeting of my firm in your city Toronto. This meeting will last for two days as many of the international partners will be joining that.

The meeting is on next month 24th and 25th November, Monday and Tuesday. However, I am planning to come early in the weekend on 22nd afternoon to explore the city. I would appriciate if you can tell me some of the good places to visit as well as cheap hotels to stay in, preferably nearby the Amazon company building on downtown area.

I would love to spend one of my evenings with you and I was wondering if you are available to meet me during that weekend. We can either go for a dinner or any other places of your recommandation. Looking forward to hear back from you soon.

Best Wishes,

Genesis

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you explain that you are attending your firm’s annual business meeting, ask for recommendations on places to visit and accommodation, and invite Misha to spend an evening with you. The specific dates and your early arrival also give your friend useful context, while the friendly opening and closing suit the relationship. The request for sightseeing advice is clear, though the accommodation question and reference to the Amazon building slightly broaden the focus beyond the main sightseeing request. To make the ideas even more fully developed, you could mention what kinds of attractions interest you or suggest a particular evening activity. Overall, the purpose and requests are well communicated, with only small opportunities to add detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the first paragraph explains the business trip, the second gives the dates and asks for recommendations, and the final paragraph makes the invitation. This progression makes the letter easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “as well as” help connect details. The paragraphs also separate the letter’s main purposes appropriately. Some connections are less smooth: “However” does not express a strong contrast between the meeting dates and your early arrival, and the final invitation combines dinner with a broad request for other recommendations. A more direct transition and a clearer separation of the sightseeing and accommodation questions would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a friendly letter, including phrases such as “annual business meeting,” “international partners,” “explore the city,” and “places to visit.” These communicate the situation and requests clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice or collocation inaccuracies: “appriciate,” “recommandation,” and “Looking forward to hear back” reduce the naturalness of the writing. “Cheap hotels” is understandable but could be expressed more tactfully as “affordable accommodation.” The phrase “on downtown area” is also not idiomatic. More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would help you use your vocabulary with greater precision and show more consistent control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “I would love to spend one of my evenings with you and I was wondering if you are available to meet me.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, and you use past, present, and future-related forms to explain the trip. Some grammatical errors remain, including “The meeting is on next month” and “nearby the Amazon company building on downtown area”; these involve prepositions and article use. In “Looking forward to hear back,” the verb pattern should be “looking forward to hearing.” The sentence about the partners joining “that” also has an unclear reference. Checking these patterns and varying sentence structures more confidently would improve accuracy.
