Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the purpose of the trip, a request for local recommendations, and an invitation to meet. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. For example, the request for things to do is quite brief, and the purpose of the trip could be expanded with more detail to fully satisfy the task requirements. Because the length requirement was not met, the response cannot be awarded a higher band for task achievement, as the ideas remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the trip to asking for advice and finally extending an invitation. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is somewhat fragmented due to the short length. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Also' and 'However', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by short, choppy sentences. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly, ensuring that the transition between your business purpose and your social plans feels more natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for a personal letter, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on common phrases like 'good news' and 'spend time'. While the meaning is always clear, there is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more descriptive language or idiomatic expressions appropriate for a letter to a friend, such as 'catch up' or 'looking forward to', while ensuring collocations are accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
There are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the text. For instance, 'discuss about' is incorrect (it should be 'discuss the project'), 'It is been longtime' should be 'It has been a long time', and there are comma splices, such as 'I Hope you’re doing well, I want to let you know'. While you use a mix of simple and some complex structures, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
