Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jahnavi,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to inform you about my business trip to Ottawa. My whole team is coming there, as we have to attend the seminar regarding the new business. techniques. The seminar is at Convention Centre, Baybridge. It is from 24th of August to 26th of August. So, I am planning to stay for a day or two depending on my availability after that.
Therefore, I was thinking that if I am coming so far, I should visit some attractions. I need to check with you that what are the famous spots where I can go in this time period. If you can send me the list of such places, it would be great help and then I can plan my itinerary.
Also, I want to ask you that if you are free sometime in the evening after the work, it would be great if you join me. We can hang up together, as I haven't met you from the years.
Let me know what time suits best for you and will be waiting for your response.
Yours lovely,
Priyanka.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the purpose of the trip is explained, you ask for recommendations, and you extend an invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the communication is immediately obvious to the reader. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the 'new business techniques' or suggest a specific activity for the meeting, which would further develop the ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated engagement with the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Also', and 'So' to link your ideas. While the flow is clear, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing (e.g., instead of repeating 'the seminar', you could use 'this event'). Paragraphing is used effectively, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is a key requirement for this band level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'itinerary', 'attractions', and 'availability' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'haven't met you from the years' (should be 'for years') and 'hang up together' (which usually means ending a phone call; 'hang out' would be the correct phrasal verb). Expanding your range to include more idiomatic expressions or precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I need to check with you that what are the famous spots' (word order) and 'it would be great if you join me' (should be 'if you could join me' or 'if you joined me'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering conditional structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Your punctuation is generally accurate, which helps maintain the readability of your letter.
