Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are at pink of your health. I currently get a chance to visit Jaipur for my business trip. I am visiting there for the next whole week. As you know I am recently got my promotion as a Senior Project Manager, so my seniors want me to go through the ongoing projects of Jaipur. However, I can take the report online but I am preferring to visit there personally.

Let me know the famous places to go after my work. I am visiting here for the first time, and I want to utilise my visit. My office is from 10 AM to 5 PM for the weekdays, so tell me the places accordingly. Moreover, I am free for the whole next weekend as my flight will be scheduled for Monday.

I am not going to call you everyday, Instead give you the invitation to come on any day. In addition to this, make your weekend available for me to enjoy and spend some time together.

Yours faithfully,

Mike.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the purpose of the trip, asking for recommendations, and inviting your friend to meet. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the visit is clearly stated. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the invitation could be more specific or enthusiastic to better reflect the relationship. While the task is fully covered, the response lacks a bit of depth in the way the ideas are presented, which keeps it at a solid level for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'moreover', and 'in addition to this' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, particularly the shift between the work schedule and the invitation. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of the letter is clear, making it easy for the reader to follow your intentions throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'at pink of your health' (an incorrect idiom) and 'I am preferring to visit' (which should be 'I prefer'). You also use some repetitive phrasing, such as 'visiting' and 'visit' multiple times in close proximity. To reach a higher band, try to use more varied synonyms and ensure that idiomatic expressions are used correctly. Despite these minor issues, your vocabulary is adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I currently get a chance' (should be 'I have a chance'), 'I am recently got my promotion' (should be 'I recently got'), and 'Instead give you the invitation' (which lacks a clear subject). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your letter. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and ensuring that your sentences have clear subjects and correct auxiliary verb usage.
