Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hello Dave,
How are you, I have been long time since we met last time. I want to tell you a news that I am visiting your city next month, but for short period of time.
The predoninant purpose of my trip is, my company is organising thres day training camp, it is complusory to attend it for all of our company's employees. They scheduled, the timing for this training session would be before morning, therefore i would be free in evenings for these days. I do not want to waste my evenings while sitting in hotel room only, It would be great if I explore your city and culture.
Since you have been living there for several years, I am wondering if you recommend me some places to visit, I want to see the famous landmarks, historical buildings in your city. If you will be available, If would love to spent some time together or we would have dinner in order to try your city's famous food.
I am looking forward to hear from you, on that.
Best wishes,
Tom.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the purpose of the trip, asking for recommendations, and inviting your friend to meet. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the visit is clearly stated. However, some ideas could be developed further to reach a higher band. For instance, you mention the training is 'compulsory' and 'three days', which is good detail, but you could elaborate slightly more on your excitement about the trip or the specific type of food you are interested in to make the letter feel more natural and engaging.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the opening to the purpose of the visit, then to the request for advice, and finally the invitation. Paragraphing is used, though the structure is slightly fragmented. You use some cohesive devices like 'Since' and 'therefore', but the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by minor punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in 'How are you, I have been long time...'. Improving the use of transition words and ensuring sentences are correctly linked would enhance the overall readability and flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly, such as 'predominant', 'compulsory', and 'landmarks'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'predoninant' (predominant), 'thres' (three), and 'complusory' (compulsory). Additionally, phrases like 'I have been long time since we met' are slightly unnatural; a more idiomatic expression would be 'It has been a long time since we last met'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and sentence punctuation. Examples include 'I am wondering if you recommend me' (should be 'if you could recommend'), 'If you will be available, If would love to spent' (should be 'If you are available, I would love to spend'), and 'I am looking forward to hear' (should be 'looking forward to hearing'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
