Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Ankit,
I hope you're in the pink of health! It's been ages and ages since we caught up. I'm really excited to meet you after a long time. My team is launching a new product, and they choose your city for their first event. Although I have one week to stay, the first three days are allocted for work, and the remaining days are an incentive for me to rejuvenate myself.
Ottawa is well known for their beauty of the lakes. I am going to experience the sightseeing first before I will go to other tourist places. Afterward, I am wondering to visit the popular restaurants nearby. Do you know any of them? I prefer to visit the historical museums as well. Let me know if you have any information.
I would be grateful if you could join us on April 22nd 2026 in the Downtown area. Please let me know your availability. So, I would plan to catch up soon.
See you soon!
Yours lovingly,
Gurdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip (a product launch), asked for recommendations regarding sightseeing and dining, and extended a specific invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context of your visit and your expectations. You have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although', 'Afterward', and 'In addition', to link your sentences. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother to improve the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions like 'in the pink of health' and 'caught up'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'allocted' (spelling error) and 'experience the sightseeing' (which is slightly unnatural; 'go sightseeing' is better). You also use 'beauty of the lakes' where 'scenic lakes' or 'the beauty of the lakes' would be more precise. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'they choose your city' (should be 'chose' for past tense) and 'I am wondering to visit' (should be 'I am wondering about visiting' or 'I would like to visit'). Additionally, 'Ottawa is well known for their beauty' should use 'its' to refer to the city. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and you show a good command of basic and some complex grammatical forms.
