Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Amy,

Hope you’re doing well? It’s been longtime since we met. I’d like to let you know that I’m visiting Montreal in the next month 7th September, Wednesday.

My company planned clients meeting at head office which is in Montreal. Hence, I’ll be reaching the place 7th September morning 8 am. I’m extremely excited to visit the place and explore different cuisines, specially the croissant which you always get it for me.

Client conference meeting will end on Friday and our return flight is scheduled on Sunday evening. Hence, if you can suggest me certain fascinating activities do and places for sightseeing will be extremely helpful to occupy the weekend and also carry nostalgic memories with me back home.

Since it’s been longtime we didn’t meet. I’ll be extremely delighted if you can join with me to spend these days and recall our childhood memories back.

Waiting for your response and hope to see you soon.

Warm regards,

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip (a client meeting), asked for recommendations regarding sightseeing and activities, and extended a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both the context of your visit and your expectations for the weekend. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the purpose of the trip to the request for advice and the final invitation. You use paragraphing to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical at times, such as the repetitive use of 'Hence' and 'Since'. While the flow is generally clear, incorporating a wider variety of linking words or phrases would improve the overall cohesion and make the transitions between sentences feel more natural and less forced.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your meaning. You use some specific terms like 'client conference' and 'nostalgic memories'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reaching the place' instead of 'arriving' and 'join with me' instead of 'join me'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range to include more precise collocations would enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles and prepositions, such as 'It’s been longtime' (should be 'a long time') and 'My company planned clients meeting' (should be 'a client meeting'). Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings like 'suggest me certain fascinating activities do'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
