Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ric,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about my upcoming business trip in Kelowna for 5 business days starting from 1st July, 2026. There will be an Automotive seminar where I am invited as a participant as well as guest speaker for upcoming changes in auto drive technology. During my trip I would be there for 5 days and 4 night at Hotel Hyatt in downtown.

You have been living there for more than a decade and I saw your Facebook posts of exploring local monuments and tourist attractions. Because I would be free after 4 pm each day so I would like to ask you some local tourist attractions to visit or any activities which is most fun to do in Kelowna. Please keep in mind that I might have 4pm to midnight window only to do these activities. I prefer beach activities such as underwater scuba diving and boat riding.

I would also wish to invite you for a family dinner at my stay, organized by my corporate team. There all the members of the seminar and participants give a brief summary of the achievement and award ceremony.

It would be my pleasure to have that award with you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip, asked for recommendations, and extended an invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed. You provided specific details about your schedule and the nature of the seminar, which adds clarity to your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are logically consistent; for example, mentioning 'underwater scuba diving' in a city context might seem slightly unrealistic unless the city is known for it, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Because I would be free' and 'I would also wish to invite you,' which help link your ideas. However, the transition between the invitation and the final sentence is slightly abrupt. To improve, try using more varied linking words or phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, ensuring that the progression of ideas feels natural throughout the entire letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'upcoming business trip,' 'local monuments,' and 'tourist attractions' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'upcoming changes in auto drive technology' (which could be more naturally phrased as 'advancements in autonomous driving technology') and 'do these activities' (which is slightly repetitive). You demonstrate a good awareness of the informal style required for a letter to a friend, but incorporating a few more precise or idiomatic expressions would elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'in Kelowna' instead of 'to Kelowna' when discussing your trip, and 'any activities which is most fun' (should be 'are'). Additionally, '4 night' should be '4 nights'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will help you achieve greater accuracy.
