Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Pooja,

I am writing to tell you about my business trip in Barrie city, and I will have some extra time to enjoy leisure activities.

My company always focuses on experienced and young people to increase the work productivity so we are panning to organize a job fair where talented and educated people are invited so that they can be interviewed on the spot to be a part of our company.

I would like to take your advice about visiting places and doing some fun activities because this is a three days of trip. Therefore, could you recommend my any famous places where I can enjoy my free time, and do some special things that could be interesting for me.

I would like to invite you if you have free time to spend with me during evening because we did not meet from a long time so I think that this will be a great opportunity for us to spend time together and have fun for a while.

I look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip (a job fair), asked for recommendations for sightseeing, and extended a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context of your visit. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more concise to avoid minor repetition, but overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point from the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'because', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more naturally. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'My company' or 'I would like', you could vary the sentence structure to improve the flow between ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'work productivity', 'on the spot', and 'leisure activities' are used correctly. However, there are some minor word choice errors, such as 'recommend my any' (should be 'recommend me any') and 'three days of trip' (should be 'three-day trip'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the text from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would enhance your lexical range and make your writing sound more natural and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For instance, 'we did not meet from a long time' should be 'we have not met for a long time' (present perfect tense). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the opening ('Barrie city' should be 'the city of Barrie'). Despite these errors, your grammar is generally functional and does not cause confusion. To improve, focus on mastering verb tenses and preposition usage, as these are the most frequent areas where errors occur in your writing.
