Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Fateh,

I hope you are fine. You will be excited after hearing that I will be coming to your city, Toronto, for a week from September 9 to September 16 due to her baby shower. She is going to reveal her baby gender as I am the revealer. It is a one day party and you are going with me.

I am so happy that I get a week off from my job. Moreover, I can spend a week with you. Furthermore, I always wanted to visit Wonderland, Niagara falls, Kakabake falls and many more places.

This is my first time visiting Toronto and I don't know many people in that area. I can only trust you. This is your job to take me to all the places. I have already plan a whole week with you.

However, I do not book the hotels yet. Can you suggest me some places where I can live? I will be waiting for your reply.

Your lovingly,

Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: explaining the purpose of the trip, asking for sightseeing recommendations, and inviting your friend. However, the explanation of the trip purpose is confusing. You mention a 'baby shower' and 'baby gender' reveal, but the phrasing 'due to her baby shower' and 'as I am the revealer' is unclear. Additionally, stating 'you are going with me' to a party you are attending in another city sounds slightly demanding rather than a friendly invitation. To improve, ensure your narrative flow is logical and your tone remains consistently polite and clear throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the transition between the purpose of the trip and the request for sightseeing is a bit abrupt. Some sentences, such as 'This is your job to take me to all the places,' sound slightly unnatural and overly direct, which affects the flow of the letter. Using a wider variety of linking words and softening your requests would improve the overall coherence and tone.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'sightseeing' and 'recommendations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I do not book the hotels yet' should be 'I have not booked the hotels yet,' and 'baby gender' is better expressed as 'gender reveal party.' The phrase 'I am the revealer' is also non-standard. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they limit your score. Focus on learning common collocations for travel and social arrangements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you are fine' (which is slightly unnatural; 'I hope you are doing well' is better), 'I have already plan' (should be 'planned'), and 'suggest me some places' (should be 'suggest some places to me'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is occasionally repetitive. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent verb tense usage and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically accurate.
