Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Priya,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing because i will be visiting your city next month for a business trip. I have to attend some meetings for work, but luckily, I will have a couple of free days to explore the city.
Since you have been living there for a while, I wanted to ask you about some good places to visit. Are there any famous tourist attraction , shopping areas, or nice restaurants that you would recommend? I would also love to visit a park or any interesting place that is popular among local people.
It would be great if we could spend some time together during my visit. Maybe we could go sightseeing or have dinner at a nice restaurant. Please let me know what day would be convenient for you.
I am really excited about the trip and looking forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes,
Mansi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain the purpose of the trip (work meetings), ask for recommendations regarding sightseeing and local activities, and extend a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Since you have been living there', 'I would also love to', and 'It would be great if', which connect your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The layout is standard for a personal letter, and the flow of information is natural and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'explore the city', 'tourist attraction', and 'convenient for you' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or descriptive language, such as 'vibrant shopping districts' or 'local hidden gems'. There is a minor error in 'tourist attraction' (should be plural 'attractions'), but this does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few minor slips, such as the lowercase 'i' in the first paragraph and the missing plural 's' in 'tourist attraction'. However, these are rare and do not affect the clarity of your message. You show good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which makes your writing easy to read and professional in its presentation.
