Student answer (Band 7.5)

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to inform you that I will be visiting your city next week for 3 days.

My purpose of the visit is that my company is sending our team on business trip as our client has headquarter there. Since on Wednesday and Thursday, we will complete our work by 4pm, I wished to see around the city.

I would like to recieve your suggestions on what places I should see. Is there some popular things that tourists enjoy like museum, lakes or side-seeing spots? Additionally, I would like to know your favourite restaurants in the city that I must try.

It will be very nice if you can join me for dinner on one of the days while I will be there. It has been months since we last met. I understand if your schedule is busy but I will really appreciate if you take out some time to meet me.

Take care!

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the purpose of the trip is explained, suggestions for sightseeing are requested, and an invitation to dinner is extended. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the communication is immediately obvious to the reader. All parts of the prompt are covered well, and the response is well-developed for the task type.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Since,' and 'It will be very nice if' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary used is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses natural phrases like 'take out some time' and 'see around the city.' While the range is adequate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more precise or sophisticated vocabulary to move into the higher band range. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices are generally accurate and fit the context of a friendly letter well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a good control of grammar, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor errors, such as 'my purpose of the visit is that my company is sending our team on business trip' (missing an article 'a') and 'side-seeing' (should be 'sightseeing'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of the sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally handled correctly throughout the letter.
