Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Pamal,
How are you? it has been a long time since we last spoke. I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I am coming to New York next month from 12th to 16th for a business trip.
Our company is planning to launch the company's products in the United States, and they have decided to start it from New York. Thus, the company is sending me to meet with the distributers, so I have a series of meetings with them, and will give them a presentation on the products.
Fortunately, I have all the meetings in the mornings before 11:00 am, and after that I am completely free to explore the city. Since I enjoy trying different foods, could you recommend me some restaurants where I can go. Furthermore, I am thing to visit some famous and historical places during the afternoon, so could you please suggest me some places which are worth visiting and open in the afternoon.
As I will be in the city, I was wondering if we can meet at some point, and go together to try different foods. Or if you have a day off between these days, we can go for tracking since New York is popular for its tracking spots.
Please let me know your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.
Catch you soon!
Warmly,
Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip (a business launch and product presentation), asked for recommendations regarding sightseeing and dining, and extended a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the purpose of the trip from the requests for information and the invitation. Cohesive devices such as 'Thus', 'Fortunately', 'Furthermore', and 'As I will be in the city' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow, and the referencing is clear throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'distributers', 'explore the city', and 'worth visiting' are used correctly. There are a few minor issues, such as the misuse of 'tracking' instead of 'trekking' or 'hiking', and the slightly awkward phrasing 'recommend me some restaurants' (it is more natural to say 'recommend some restaurants to me'). However, these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, and you successfully use a variety of words to express your needs and plans.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'I am thing to visit' (should be 'I am thinking of visiting') and 'suggest me some places' (should be 'suggest some places to me'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the opening ('it has been' should be 'It has been'). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. Your control over complex structures is generally good.
