Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this to inform you that I am coming to Toronto for a business trip next week on 12th September. I have meetings lined up on 13th, however next day I have a day off to explore the city. As it is a business trip so I am travelling just by myself

Moreover, it will be my first time to Toronto and I am planning to visit CN Tower, but I am not sure about ticket booking. Also, I do not have an idea about best food in the city as you know I am a vegan and I will appreciate your suggestions for vegan restaurant as well as some alluring viewpoints in the city.

I will be excited if you can join not only to spend some time together reliving old memories, but also being my tourist guide for one day. I remember you were talking about visiting an aquarium in the city center and I think it is best time to visit there together.

I am waiting for your approval on this plan and looking forward to have a great time together.

Best Regards,

Cindy Patrick

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip, asked for recommendations regarding sightseeing and vegan dining, and extended a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively, ensuring the reader understands both your schedule and your expectations for the visit.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the purpose of the trip to specific requests and the final invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'not only... but also' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be slightly more natural to improve the overall cohesion. For instance, the transition between the business trip details and the sightseeing requests is functional but could be enhanced with more varied linking phrases to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use some specific terms like 'alluring viewpoints' and 'reliving old memories', which add a nice touch to the letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I do not have an idea about best food' (should be 'I have no idea about the best food') and 'I am waiting for your approval' (which sounds a bit formal/authoritative for a friend). Expanding your range of idiomatic expressions or more precise adjectives would help elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am travelling just by myself' (should be 'I am travelling by myself'), 'I am planning to visit CN Tower' (needs an article: 'the CN Tower'), and 'looking forward to have a great time' (should be 'looking forward to having'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage after common phrases.
