Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Shagun,
Hope you are doing splendidly well. It’s been a while we have not caught up together. You will be delighted to hear that I am organizing a trip to your hometown. It was very challenging for me to get some quality time out of my hectic working schedule to sightseeing and explore new places.
The main objective of this trip is to break the monotony of my routine. Therefore, this trip will rejuvenate and lift my sprit up. I would really appreciate it if you could join and assist me throughout the day with the places that are must visit and something thrilling or adventurous I can do over there. Along with this, we both would get an opportunity to spend time and share some valuable experiences with each other during the trip.
I hope you consider my offer. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Catch you soon!

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the purpose of your trip (to break the monotony of your routine), asked for recommendations regarding sightseeing and activities, and extended a warm invitation to your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and your intentions. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about the dates or the nature of your business trip to further flesh out the scenario.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the opening to the purpose of the trip, then to the request and invitation. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Along with this', and 'I hope' to link your sentences effectively. The flow is natural and easy to follow. While the structure is sound, the transition between the opening and the purpose of the trip could be slightly smoother to enhance the overall cohesion. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'splendidly well', 'break the monotony', and 'rejuvenate'. These choices are natural and appropriate for the context. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'It’s been a while we have not caught up', which would be more naturally phrased as 'It’s been a while since we caught up'. Additionally, 'sightseeing' is used as a verb here, whereas it is typically a noun or gerund. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'It’s been a while we have not caught up' is structurally awkward. The phrase 'lift my sprit up' contains a spelling error ('spirit') and the preposition 'up' is redundant with 'lift'. There is also a minor error in 'places that are must visit', which should be 'places that are a must-visit'. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and you show a good command of sentence variety throughout the letter.
