Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Arbaaz,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that i am planning to travel a city called Mumbai where you are currently living.

There are two main reasons to visit Mumbai. The main objective is to attain my business meeting with Adani group LTD which will be conducted on 14th October. Secondly, we haven't meet from last 2 years as you moved to this city for your career. I am planning to come to you on 5th October. Therefore, we have almost 2 week to spent together.

I know you have very busy schedule specially at the end of a year but i know you are always ready to go outside with me. I have some plan in mind as i want you to take me to a Marien drive where we can spent some time on beach as we use to do when you were here. Secondly, i haven't visit a famous actor Sharuk khan's house, Mannat apartment. I want to explore these two things with you during your spare time.

I am inviting you at the party as well that will be held after a meeting. It has been almost 2 years that we haven't spent time together at the party therefore i encourage you to take some time and come with me.

Thank you for being my best friend. I am waiting for you response before making this trip in order to manage our time well.

Regards,

Shaikh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the purpose of the trip, asking for recommendations, and inviting your friend to join you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal style throughout. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the visit is well-defined. To reach a higher band, ensure that your requests for information are more varied and that you provide slightly more detail regarding the logistics of the meeting or the sightseeing plans to fully develop the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Secondly', and 'In addition', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the use of 'Secondly' appears twice in close proximity. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your meaning. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'attain my business meeting' (should be 'attend') and 'go outside with me' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context). You also have some spelling errors like 'Marien drive' (Marine Drive) and 'Sharuk khan' (Shah Rukh Khan). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring the correct spelling of proper nouns and common business terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles. For instance, 'i haven't meet from last 2 years' should be 'we haven't met for the last two years', and 'I am inviting you at the party' should be 'to the party'. Additionally, the pronoun 'I' should always be capitalized. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
