Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Priyanshu,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am coming to visit your city next month due to some business purposes.

As you know, I have been working in an MNC. Its head office is in London. However, the upper management is looking to open a new location in your city. Hence, they organised a meeting on 15th of next month.

I will be spending almost 5-6 days there. You have told me about beauty of the city. So, let me know where should I go for sight-seeing also as you know I love food. It would be great if you can suggest me some nice restaurants.

I know you love watching horror movie. There is a new movie releasing on the 3rd day of my trip. I would like it if you can go with me as its been so long since we met.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours lovingly,

Bhupinder Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the purpose of the trip is clearly explained as a business meeting regarding the opening of a new MNC location. Second, the writer asks about things to do and see, specifically requesting restaurant suggestions due to their love for food. Third, an explicit invitation is extended to the friend to watch a horror movie together on the third day of the trip. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression from the greeting and purpose of the trip to sightseeing requests and the final invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the business context in the second paragraph and the leisure plans in the third and fourth paragraphs. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, although some transitional phrases feel slightly formulaic. Overall, the flow is smooth and easy to follow, supporting the communicative purpose effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task letter, incorporating terms such as 'upper management', 'head office', and 'sight-seeing'. While most word choices are clear, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as writing 'due to some business purposes' instead of 'for business purposes' and omitting an article in 'about beauty of the city'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a band 6 level where less common items are attempted with occasional awkwardness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses and conditionals ('It would be great if you can suggest...'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'where should I go' (which should be 'where I should go' in an indirect question) and 'its been so long' (missing an apostrophe for 'it has'). Despite these occasional lapses, the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, and communication is never impeded.
