Student answer (Band 6.0)
Subject: Writing my freind to join me on Sightseeing.
Dear Dev,
Hope you are doing great, i just got mail from my company that i am supposed to come new york for my business trip. from the 1st meeting and 2nd there is a gap of 3 days and i was wondering that i could possibly ask you since you live in the same city.
Since you are already there you know some of the places by yourself and i have planned some of the places to see from my self as well, also not to mention i was too busy from last 2 yeras i couldn't reply to your mails.
i would really appreciare if you would join me on little trip as we have not met for so long as well we will have some time spend together and we relive the moments as well.
Yours truly,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully explain the purpose of the trip ("come new york for my business trip" and the 3-day gap), ask about things to do and see ("know some of the places by yourself and i have planned some of the places to see from my self as well"), and invite your friend to join you ("i would really appreciare if you would join me on little trip"). The tone is appropriately informal and friendly for a letter to a friend. The bullet points are all addressed, although the ideas could be slightly more fully extended for a higher band. Overall, the task requirements are well met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from greeting to purpose, planning, invitation, and sign-off. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the body of the letter is compressed into three lengthy, run-on sentences that lack proper full stops, making the text feel breathless. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, relying heavily on conjunctions like "and" and "since". Referencing is mostly clear, but the lack of punctuation and sentence boundaries hinders smooth progression. More varied cohesive links and proper sentence splitting would elevate this score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate informal phrases suitable for writing to a friend, such as "doing great" and "business trip". You attempt some less common expressions, though there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as "freind" instead of friend, "appreciare" instead of appreciate, and "yeras" instead of years. Collocations are generally acceptable, but precision is lacking in phrases like "come new york" (instead of "come to New York"). These errors do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow your meaning, placing your lexical range squarely at band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the conditional-style clause in "i was wondering that i could possibly ask you". However, grammatical and punctuation accuracy is weak. There are frequent run-on sentences joined by commas rather than full stops, capitalisation errors (such as lowercase "i" and "new york"), and missing prepositions. For instance, the entire second paragraph consists of a single continuous sentence connected by commas. While communication is not impeded and your meaning remains clear, the lack of control over basic punctuation and sentence boundaries prevents a higher score.
