Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt in a satisfactory manner. The writer successfully explains the purpose of the trip, mentioning a business trip related to a transport business and an important meeting with a client. The letter also asks about things to do and see by expressing a desire to explore the city and mentioning its location on the USA border. Finally, a clear invitation is extended to the friend to join the writer during the visit. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, placing this response in Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. The text is divided into logical paragraphs that separate the different points of the letter. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the second paragraph relies heavily on repetitive coordinating conjunctions like 'and' rather than using a variety of cohesive devices. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow could be significantly improved with smoother transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is used, though paragraph breaks could be better managed. This performance aligns with a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts. There are attempts to use less common items and descriptive phrases, such as 'transport business', 'stunning', and 'explore'. However, there are also noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'meating' instead of meeting, 'alot' instead of a lot, and 'helpfull' instead of helpful. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'quality of time' instead of 'quality time'. Despite these lexical errors, meaning is never impeded, which is characteristic of a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'During my trip i have some extra time that I want to spend with you...'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. These include missing capitalisation for the personal pronoun 'i', lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences in a few instances, and punctuation lapses such as run-on sentences. Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message without significant difficulty. This fits the criteria for a Band 6.0.
