Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sarah,

I hope you're doing well. I just want to let you know that I will be visiting your city for a business trip in a few weeks.

i will be attending three-day conference meetings for healthcare-management, from 15th october to 17th october. Although most of my time will be spent attending meetings, I know this city has attractive places to visit. it would be best time to explore in the evening and the final afternoon such as museums, famous buildings, local markets that you would recommend. Also, if you can suggest me some restaurants for traditional food.

It would be wonderful if we spend some time together, while i will be there. Perhaps we could meet for dinner in one of evening and see some parks together. please let me know if you are available.

I am really looking forward to seeing you again. Hope to catch up soon.

Best wishes ,

Tanvi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly explain the purpose of your trip by mentioning your healthcare management conference from October 15th to 17th. You also effectively ask about things to do and see, specifically mentioning museums, buildings, local markets, and traditional food restaurants. Finally, you clearly invite your friend to do something together by suggesting dinner and exploring parks. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout the letter. To reach a higher level, you could further extend and develop your ideas, perhaps by adding more detail about what specific types of cuisine or local sights you are most interested in, giving the communication an even more natural and elaborate flow while maintaining complete relevance to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The opening greeting sets the friendly tone, and each paragraph transitions smoothly to a new bullet point: purpose in the first paragraph, sightseeing questions in the second, and the invitation in the third, followed by a warm closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Also', and 'Perhaps' to connect your ideas effectively. However, referencing and paragraph flow could be slightly more refined. For instance, in the second paragraph, the transition into asking about museums and restaurants feels a bit dense and could be broken down or linked with more varied cohesive markers. Improving the flexibility and natural integration of your linking words would elevate the structural flow even further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'healthcare-management', 'traditional food', and 'available'. You make some successful attempts at less common vocabulary. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'conference meetings for healthcare-management' rather than 'healthcare management conferences', and 'one of evening' instead of 'one of the evenings'. Additionally, there are a few capitalization errors with pronouns and sentence beginnings, such as 'i will be' and 'it would be best time'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of precise lexical items and idiomatic phrases with fewer minor slips in collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like concessive clauses with 'Although', conditional constructions, and infinitive phrases. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'I hope you're doing well' and 'Please let me know if you are available.' However, a number of grammatical and punctuation errors persist throughout the text, including lowercase pronoun usage ('i will be attending', 'while i will be there'), missing articles ('it would be best time'), and slight awkwardness in phrasing ('it would be best time to explore in the evening and the final afternoon such as museums'). To reach higher proficiency, you need to maintain greater control over punctuation, capitalization, and complex sentence structures, ensuring that errors become truly rare.
