Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points required by the prompt. The purpose of the trip is explained as attending several business meetings with a client, questions are asked about tourist attractions, local food, and shopping, and a clear invitation is extended to the friend. However, the ideas are somewhat generalized and under-developed, particularly regarding the specific plans for sightseeing. Furthermore, the length requirement is NOT met; the task requires a minimum of 150 words, but this response contains only 128 words, leaving it 22 words short. To achieve a higher band, the response must meet the word count minimum and extend the details regarding the sightseeing itinerary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, such as introducing the visit, asking questions, and making the invitation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'I will be there' and 'As it is a long while', though referencing is occasionally mechanical or repetitive. Progression is generally logical, taking the reader smoothly from the announcement of the trip to the request for suggestions and the final invitation. To move further up, the transitions between sentences could be made more natural and varied, avoiding a repetitive start to sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with standard phrases like 'upcoming trip', 'tourist attractions', and 'local food'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'eagerly waiting', but makes some errors in word choice, such as writing 'more happy' instead of 'happier', and spelling issues such as 'ling' instead of 'long'. These lexical and spelling errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the middle bands. To improve, the student should expand their range of descriptive vocabulary and check for correct word forms and spelling before finalizing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am really excited because I will be visiting for a business meeting...' There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly lower-case 'i' pronouns ('i am writing', 'i have to attend'), missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences, and a punctuation error with a fragment ('Where i can visit in my free time.'). However, these errors rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student must eliminate basic punctuation and capitalization errors and demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures.
