Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aman,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing a quick note to inform you that next month, I am travelling to your city Patiala for a business trip. I have certain important commitments regarding my workplace, and I will complete those in just two days. After that, I am planning to meet you and have some fun time with you.

Luckily, after several years, we are getting opportunity to meet each other. After we completed our college, we never met each other due to home and work responsibilities. I miss college days especially the time we spend together. Please can you plan a trip as you know more about your area. I heard a lot about a Sheesh Mahal, and I think that would be a worth visiting place.

During this visit, I would love to invite you to join me. So, that we can spend a quality time together after a long time, recall our memories and enjoy to visit some renowed places in your city.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Best regards,

Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain the purpose of your trip by mentioning that you are travelling to Patiala for a business commitment that will last two days. You also successfully ask about things to do and see by inquiring about Sheesh Mahal, and you explicitly invite your friend to join you for sightseeing and catching up. All three bullet points from the instructions are covered. However, while your ideas are relevant, some parts of the development lean toward being slightly conversational and repetitive, such as reiterating that you want to meet after a long time in multiple sentences. This keeps the response at a level where all parts are addressed, but some details could be more thoroughly or concisely extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow from the greeting to the purpose of the trip, past memories, the invitation, and the sign-off. You use basic paragraphing effectively to separate your ideas. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly with transitions like 'After that' and 'After we completed our college'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as using 'that' or 'those' where clearer linking would smooth the progression. To reach the next level, you would need to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without relying on repetitive sentence openings.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using phrases like 'important commitments', 'workplace', and 'quality time'. You also attempt some less common items such as 'renowed', though this contains a spelling error ('renowned'). There are a few word choice and spelling inaccuracies that do not impede communication, such as 'getting opportunity' (missing an article) and 'worth visiting place' (awkward collocation for 'place worth visiting'). These minor errors and the reliance on fairly standard vocabulary place your lexical range appropriately at this tier, requiring a wider and more precise control of less common lexical items to advance further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well, as seen in sentences like 'Please can you plan a trip as you know more about your area.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'we are getting opportunity' (missing article), 'time we spend together' (tense consistency issue, should be 'spent'), and a stray comma in 'So, that we can spend...'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a higher score, you would need a wider variety of complex structures with more frequent error-free sentences and tighter control over articles and punctuation.
