Student answer (Band 6.0)
Hi Sam,
As we discussed last year, i am coming to visit paris next week. I have an exhibition coming tuesday, but i will be arriving early as the flights are cheap. I will be landing coming Monday and will be in paris untill Thursday evening.
I know you have been living in paris for more than three years. That makes you my travel guide. It's been long i haven't visit any place even thou, i travel quite a lot for work. Having you in Paris feels like the perfect opportunity to spend some time to recreate and relive the time we use to hang out.
I would like you to come with me to visit Eifel tower. Your family is also invited as it would be boring for us two to visit alone. I know your kids enjoyed their last visit and they never wanted to go back home. I still remember the taste of ice cream, we had from that corner ice cream shop.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regard,
Junaid

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The letter covers all three required points: you explain that the visit is connected to an exhibition, ask Sam to act as your guide, and invite Sam and the family to visit the Eiffel Tower. The personal memories about the children and the ice-cream shop also make the invitation relevant and friendly. However, the purpose of the trip is not fully clear: “I have an exhibition coming Tuesday” does not explain whether you are attending or presenting one. The request for sightseeing advice is also indirect; you ask Sam to be your “travel guide” but do not ask about specific places or activities. Clarifying the exhibition and asking directly for recommendations would make the task response more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you give your travel dates, explain your connection with Sam, make an invitation, and close appropriately. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and references such as “That makes you my travel guide” connect logically to Sam’s experience of living in Paris. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger progression. To make the flow more consistently smooth, connect related details more carefully: the shift from your work travel to wanting to “recreate and relive” past times is abrupt, and the invitation could follow a direct question about what else to see. A few punctuation and spacing issues also interrupt the reading, such as “guide. It's” and the comma in “ice cream, we had.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly personal letter, including “travel guide,” “opportunity,” “invited,” and “looking forward to hearing from you.” The references to the ice-cream shop and the children’s previous visit add specific, personal detail. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, particularly “recreate and relive,” though the combination sounds unnatural in this context. Some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, including “exhibition coming,” “Eifel tower,” and “untill.” The meaning is generally understandable, but more natural collocations and accurate spelling would strengthen control. Choose familiar expressions carefully, and use a dictionary to check place names and less certain phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example “I know you have been living in Paris for more than three years” and “Your family is also invited as it would be boring for us two to visit alone.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in verb forms and sentence construction are noticeable. Examples include “It's been long i haven't visit any place,” where the tense and clause structure need correction, and “I will be landing coming Monday,” which combines two incompatible constructions. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, as in lowercase “i” and the missing space after “guide.” Practise accurate past and present-perfect forms, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
