Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Gagan,
Hello, how are you doing? I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing this letter to let you know that I would be coming for a business trip to your city, Delhi.
The company that I have been working with is in works with a client since January of his year. They have been planning a big project which would help in saving the natural resources of the country. The project has been finalised and I have been given the responsibility to lead it thus this trip to Delhi.
It is a five day drip from 10th of October to the 14th. I do have a hectic schedule throughout the day however I would have free time in the evenings. I wanted to ask you about all the places that could visit during that time. I am not very keen on seeing the nightlife that your city has to offer although I would like to know about the places that would be a little calm and away from the hustle of daily life.
I know you have a busy schedule as well but it would be great if you could join me during these evenings. We could go out to Jama Masjid as I have not visited it even once and have the famous kebabs that those streets have to offer.
I would be looking forward to you reply and if possible then to spend time with you as well.
Yours lovingly,
Prabjyot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly fulfils all three requirements. You explain the business purpose by saying you have been given responsibility to lead a project, ask for suggestions about places to visit, and invite Gagan to join you for evening outings. The details about your dates, limited free time, preference for calm places, and interest in Jama Masjid make the message specific and relevant. The invitation to try the famous kebabs also gives your friend a clear activity to respond to. To make the ideas more fully developed, clarify what kind of sightseeing you would most enjoy—for example, historical sites or gardens—and make the request for recommendations slightly more direct. Overall, the purpose and friendly tone remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, logical progression: you introduce the trip, explain its business purpose, describe your availability and sightseeing preferences, and then invite your friend to join you. Paragraphing supports these shifts, and linking expressions such as “however” and “although” help connect contrasting ideas. The sequence from asking about places to proposing Jama Masjid is especially easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth: “I am writing this letter to let you know” repeats the purpose of the opening, and “I would be looking forward to you reply and if possible then to spend time with you as well” combines two closing ideas awkwardly. A more concise opening and a clearer final sentence would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly letter, including relevant expressions such as “business trip,” “lead” a project, “natural resources,” and “hustle of daily life.” These choices communicate the situation and your preferences clearly, and “hectic schedule” is an appropriate phrase. There are, however, some inaccurate word choices and collocations: “five day drip” appears to be a misspelling of “trip,” “in works with a client” is not a natural expression, and “places that could visit” needs a more suitable construction. “Calm and away from the hustle” is understandable but could be expressed more precisely. Improving collocation and checking spelling would make your vocabulary sound more natural and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as “I do have a hectic schedule throughout the day; however, I would have free time in the evenings” and the sentence explaining the project’s purpose. Most meaning is clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the company that I have been working with is in works with a client,” the structure is faulty; “has been working with a client” would be clearer. “Places that could visit” needs a subject and a suitable verb pattern, such as “places we could visit.” The closing phrase “looking forward to you reply” also needs the possessive “your.” Review articles, possessives, and verb patterns, and use punctuation to separate contrasting clauses.
