Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Smith,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing to you to inform you about my visit to your city, London in the coming month. I am not completely sure about the travel dates yet, but it would likely to be somewhere in the mid of the next month. My company is arranging a global conference in London and I am responsible for making all the arrangements. Nearly, one hundred companies will be attending this conference to discuss about the future of Artificial Intelligence and the risks asscoiated with its development.

Fortunately, I will have a few days, following this conference to explore the world's most charming city, London. You've been living in london from the last fifteen years and you know the city very well so I was wondering if you could tell me about the places that I should must visit in London during my stay. If I talk about my preference, I am more into historical places and the best part is that London has a very strong history so I assume that there will be a lot for me to explore.

Furthermore, I also want you to guide me on the activities that I could do during my stay. I've heard about the London's most famous cruise so I would love to learn more from you. Additionally, I would highly appreciate it if you could spare some time for me so that we could do sightseeing and activities together. I would love to spend time with you.

Kind regards,

Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you explain that you are organising a London conference, ask for recommendations about historical places and activities, and invite your friend to spend time sightseeing with you. The conference details, including its focus on artificial intelligence, give the purpose useful context, while your preference for historical sites makes the request more personal. The invitation is warm and explicit: “I would highly appreciate it if you could spare some time for me.” To make the ideas even more fully developed, specify a particular activity or suggest a day, even though your travel dates are not yet confirmed. Overall, the content is relevant, well developed, and appropriate for a friendly letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the visit and its business purpose, move on to sightseeing questions, and finish with an invitation. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Fortunately,” “Furthermore,” and “Additionally” help connect the points. The opening and closing also give the letter a recognisable format. At times, however, the transitions feel slightly formulaic, and some information could be grouped more tightly: the questions about places, activities, and the cruise could form one focused paragraph before the invitation. The reference to “the conference” is clear, but a more direct transition from the business purpose to your free time would make the progression smoother. Overall, organisation is clear, with some room for more flexible cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “global conference,” “historical places,” “sightseeing,” and “development.” These choices communicate the purpose and your interests clearly, and phrases such as “the world’s most charming city” add a friendly, enthusiastic tone. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices, however, including “the mid of the next month,” “should must visit,” and “the London’s most famous cruise.” The spelling error “asscoiated” also detracts from accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they show that less common or more elaborate expressions are not always controlled. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling; for example, use “in the middle of next month” and “places I should visit.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “who lives in the city” and the conditional-style request “if you could spare some time for me.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the errors rarely impede understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain: “it would likely to be” needs “it would likely be,” while “you’ve been living in London from the last fifteen years” would be more accurately expressed as “you’ve been living in London for the last fifteen years.” The construction “places that I should must visit” also combines two modal forms incorrectly. Review verb patterns, modal verbs, and prepositions in time expressions. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the control already shown.
