Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Isreal,

Hi! How have you been? I trust you have been well. I am writing to let you know that I’ll be visiting Enugu in three days time and I would be spending three weeks. It’s actually a work trip, I have a new client for onboarding into our scheme and would be in series of meetings too.

However, I would still have some free time while in the state for leisure activities. Incase you don’t know, I’ve actually never been in Enugu before and I would appreciate it if you could be my tour guide to all the exciting places there. Please let me know the things we can do and places to visit so I can pack the right clothes.

I can’t possibly come to Enugu and see hou and not host you. I’ll be booking a dinner reservation for us at the Tribune restaurant for the fanciest dinner. Just let me know when this would be convenient okay?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best.

Regards,

Trinitas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly covers all three requirements: you explain that the visit is for work and mention onboarding a new client and attending meetings; you ask Isreal for sightseeing suggestions; and you invite him to dinner. The purpose is specific, and the friendly tone suits the relationship. The request for recommendations is also linked to a practical reason—knowing what clothes to pack. To develop the ideas further, you could give a little more detail about your free-time schedule or name the kinds of attractions you enjoy, helping your friend respond with more tailored suggestions. Overall, the task is addressed clearly, with the main ideas extended, though some details remain general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you announce the trip and its purpose, move on to sightseeing, then make a dinner invitation and close appropriately. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and linking expressions such as “However” and “I look forward to hearing from you” support the flow. The sequence is easy to follow throughout. Some connections could be smoother: “However” suggests a contrast between work and free time, but the relationship could be expressed more naturally, and “Just let me know when this would be convenient” could specify whether you mean the dinner date. More precise links and references would make the cohesion feel less dependent on familiar formulae.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a friendly travel letter, including “work trip,” “onboarding,” “leisure activities,” “tour guide,” and “dinner reservation.” These choices communicate the situation and intentions clearly, and the informal tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some word-choice, spelling, and collocation inaccuracies: “Incase” should be “In case,” “see hou” appears to be a typo for “see you,” and “the fanciest dinner” is not a natural way to describe the meal or venue. “In the state” is also less precise than simply referring to the city. Aim for natural combinations such as “show me around” and “a special dinner” to improve precision and fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to understand. For example, “I would appreciate it if you could be my tour guide” uses a well-formed conditional request, while the closing sentences are controlled and clear. Some grammatical errors remain. In “I’ll be visiting Enugu in three days time and I would be spending three weeks,” the future forms are not parallel; “I’ll be spending” would fit better. “I have a new client for onboarding into our scheme and would be in series of meetings too” also needs a clearer subject and an article before “a series.” Check sentence structure and articles, while retaining the complex forms you already attempt.
