Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding the parking issue in our parking lot.

As per our agreement in the contract, only the vehicles of the families living in buliding will be allowed to park in the parking lot, but nowadays, it is very hard to find the space in the parking.

Everyday, returning back from work I have to park my car at neighbours parking lot, as there is no space at all in our parking area. I have seen a numbers of cars in our parking lot, these cars were parked from long time ago, with having no movement at all. Every single day I am wasting my precious time to find the parking and it is affecting my daily routine as well.

I am requesting you to advise to the families living in the buliding to have their own cars park in the empty space, and to have a check on the long time parked vehicles over there.

I hope you will look into this matter.

Yours Sincerely

Sagar Malhi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the situation clearly, explained the negative impact on your daily routine, and provided a practical suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on the specific safety or security concerns regarding the unauthorized vehicles. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Everyday' and 'I am requesting you to'. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this') to improve the flow between sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'regarding the parking issue' and 'affecting my daily routine' are accurate. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'neighbours parking lot' (should be 'neighbor's') and 'have a check on' (should be 'investigate' or 'monitor'). To achieve a higher score, try to use more precise vocabulary related to the context, such as 'unauthorized vehicles' or 'designated parking spaces'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'families living in buliding' (missing article 'the'), 'parked from long time ago' (should be 'for a long time'), and 'advise to the families' (should be 'advise the families'). Punctuation is generally correct, but ensure you check for minor errors like spelling 'building'. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
