Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Adam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the parking lot situation.
I have been attempting to contact you by phone to explain about my struggles with looking for a place to park in my vehicle but it end up with failure.
Every day I finish my work at 6:00 pm and when I come back I am unable to find an empty spot to park my car. That cause me distress and it costs me two hundred dollars every month since I am paying for a private space.
I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter and take appropriate action. I would also like to request offering the underground garage which helps me save time and money.
Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Abed el aziz jamal el dine.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the financial burden of paying for a private space, expanding slightly on the frustration of the situation or the specific difficulty of finding parking at 6:00 pm would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Every day' and 'I would also like to', which help the flow of information. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider range of linking words or transition phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition to this') to connect your ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'express my concerns', 'investigate this matter', and 'appropriate action' are well-chosen for a formal context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'it end up with failure' (should be 'ended in failure' or 'was unsuccessful') and 'request offering' (should be 'request access to'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations would enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'it end up with failure' contains a tense error, and 'That cause me distress' lacks subject-verb agreement ('causes'). Additionally, 'the underground garage which helps me' is slightly awkward; 'access to the underground garage, which would help me' would be more accurate. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement.
