Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Adam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the parking lot situation.

I have been attempting to contact you by phone to explain my struggles with looking for a place to park my vehicle but it has ended up with failure.

Every day I finish my work at 6:00 pm and when I come back I am unable to find an empty spot to park my car. That causes me distress and it imposes some financial burden on me every month since I am paying for a private space.

I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter and take appropriate action. I would also like to request offering the underground garage which helps me save time and money.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Abed El Aziz Jamal El Dine.

Overall7.0

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining the negative impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the explanation of why it bothers you could be more detailed to fully convey the frustration. While the task is addressed, the brevity of the response means the ideas are not as fully extended as they could be for a higher band. Nevertheless, all requirements are met, and the purpose of the letter is clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the situation from the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Every day', 'when', and 'I would also like to' are used to link ideas effectively. The progression of the argument is easy to follow. There is a slight mechanical feel to the transitions, but the overall structure is coherent and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use functional phrases like 'express my concerns', 'financial burden', and 'investigate this matter'. While the range is sufficient, it lacks the variety of less common lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is natural and appropriate for the context of a formal complaint to a landlord.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical issues, such as 'it has ended up with failure', which is slightly unnatural, and 'request offering the underground garage', which would be better phrased as 'request access to the underground garage'. However, these errors do not impede communication. The control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, and the majority of the sentences are clear and error-free.
