Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear landlord,
I am writing to let you that I am facing a car parking problem lately, and what we should do to resolve the issue.
I am pleased to inform you that I am enjoying my stay in the apartment located on Northway Avenue, in which I moved in recently. The modern amenities and quiet atmosphere is perfect for my studies. The neighbors are friendly and supporting. I am glad that I have chosen this house for my stay. However, I would like to inform you that it is very difficult to find an empty space in parking plot located in the back of the building. Generally, after finishing my part time job, I return home around 9.00 pm. As this is late in the evening, I often cannot find an empty space to park my car. Provided street parking is not allowed , I am forced to park my car in the next street. As a result, I have to walk back for 7-10 minutes in this freezing winter.
There are 20 parking plots against 15 houses in the apartment which makes me wonder why it is difficult to find a spot. I would greatly appreciate it if you could talk to the management committee to allocate one dedicated parking plot to each house, so that everyone can park in their allotted spot. I expect that you will escalate this issue on priority so that I can avoid walking in the freezing winter.
I would appreciate it if you could inform me the feedback of the management committee after y

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the situation, explaining why it is a problem, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. You have clearly explained the impact of the parking issue, specifically mentioning the inconvenience of walking in the cold. The ideas are well-developed and relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that the letter is fully completed; the abrupt ending at 'after y' suggests an incomplete thought, which slightly affects the overall task completion. However, the content provided is sufficient to meet the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'As a result,' and 'In addition' to link ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. While the flow is generally smooth, the sudden cutoff at the end disrupts the cohesion of the final paragraph. To improve, ensure that all sentences are complete and that the letter concludes with a formal sign-off, which is standard for this type of correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'modern amenities,' 'allocate one dedicated parking plot,' and 'escalate this issue' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as using 'parking plot' instead of 'parking space' or 'parking lot.' Additionally, 'supporting' should be 'supportive' when describing neighbors. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Provided street parking is not allowed, I am forced to park my car in the next street.' There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing to let you that' (missing 'know') and 'in which I moved in recently' (should be 'into which'). Subject-verb agreement is generally good, though 'atmosphere is' should be 'atmosphere are' if referring to multiple amenities. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent proofreading would help eliminate these minor slips.
