Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter about struggling with not getting a parking space when I come back home after work.

As you know I am living in a small apartment building and the parking lot is in the back of the same building. I know one new tenant renting a place upstairs and between him and his wife they have two cars and they work together. Actually their work finishes before my work and the fact that they come home earlier than me so they take the empty parking spot.

I find it challenging not to have parking spot available because when I come home I have to go get my daughter from the train station and I take public transport to go there because it’s convenient for me. I need to leave my inside the building premises however that is not the case here.

I would like you to assign me a designated parking space if it’s possible. Therefore I can have parking space for my car and I am wiling to pay extra for the parking spot. I would appreciate your assistance.

Kind regards,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. The explanation of why the situation bothers you is a bit confusing, particularly the mention of the train station and public transport, which feels slightly tangential to the core issue of parking availability. To improve, ensure that every sentence directly supports the main argument. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements of the prompt are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive (e.g., the frequent use of 'and' or 'because'). Some transitions between sentences feel a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition from the description of the neighbors to the impact on your daily routine could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'as a result' would help improve the flow and coherence of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some relevant terms like 'designated parking space' and 'building premises.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'struggling with not getting' and 'I need to leave my inside the building premises' (missing the object 'car'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The tone remains consistently formal, which is a strength in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'between him and his wife they have two cars' (redundant subject) and 'I am wiling to pay' (spelling error). There are also some issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences are complete will help improve your accuracy.
