Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to let you know about the parking issues in the building parking lot due to no space available.

As I am living in the apartment for quite some time. I am having an issue with finding the parking every time when I come home after my work. It came into my attention that due to no locks or security guard people are parking their vehicle although they are not living in the apartment.

This issue is happening for quite sometime and I want to raise it with you due to my work schedule. I am finishing my work very late at night and when I come home there is no parking therefore I am forced to park my car on the street. As the street has paid parking I have to pay everytime when I park my car.

I am requesting for suitable solutions such as to hire a security guard or build a fence for the gated car park with only tenant access. Because of this only tenant can park their car and also it will increase the security of the building.

Kind regards,

Sahil.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific detail, such as how often this occurs or the specific financial impact of the street parking, to further develop your ideas. However, the response successfully covers all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'therefore' and 'because of this,' to link your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'this issue') is always clear to the reader. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'tenant access' and 'security guard' effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'It came into my attention' (should be 'It has come to my attention') and 'due to no space available' (which is slightly awkward). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise or sophisticated collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'As I am living in the apartment for quite some time' (should be 'I have been living'), 'every time when I come home' (should be 'every time I come home'), and 'quite sometime' (should be 'quite some time'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent verb tense usage, particularly when describing ongoing situations that started in the past.
