Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sharma,

I am writing this letter to let you know the problem regarding parking area around apartment building.

I have been living here on the 4th floor of this apartment building from 2019 .It was all good before this but now you aware i spent most of time in my office due to hectic work schedule at 9 o clock i reached home i saw that there was no parking space and i would have to wait for 30 minutes in parking area.

If this happen once in a month that i can understand but now this is happening everyday after finishing my work i get tired and when i reached home this frustrate me as i you charge for parking extra.i do not think this is a right way to treat any neighbour.

I would like to give you some suggestion regarding parking issue is to designate two spots for visitors only and ask gatekeeper to take care of parking areas as people return to home late night atleast resident of building could get some space in parking after 10 o clock nobody should allowed in building area.

kindly look into this matter and take some necessary steps to overcome from this problem.

Yours sincerely,

Nikhil Dharmani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact on the writer is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a landlord, although it occasionally veers into being slightly informal or aggressive. The ideas are relevant, though some parts, such as the suggestion regarding the gatekeeper, could be developed with more clarity to ensure the landlord understands the exact logistics of the proposed solution. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally lacking. For example, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact is abrupt. Some sentences are run-on, such as 'It was all good before this but now you aware i spent most of time...', which affects the flow. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'therefore') would help create a smoother, more professional narrative flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'hectic work schedule' and 'designate', which is positive. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'overcome from this problem' (should be 'overcome this problem') and 'no parking space' (could be 'no available parking spaces'). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's ease of understanding. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in parking area'), incorrect verb tenses ('If this happen' instead of 'If this happens'), and punctuation errors, particularly with run-on sentences. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of subject-verb agreement and sentence boundaries.
