Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

I hope this letter finds you well, as I intend to write this letter regards occupied parking lot.

As I am living here for one year and we had agreed to some requirements. Even though, their is a signed contract which specify demand of basic needs and having parkade lot was my major need. Since last month I was using a belonged parkade which was conveniently vacant all the time

Meanwhile, one other tenant started to park his vehicle at my space which is completely unethical as it is a private property and breaching policy at the same time. First I had trie to explain the whole scenario but I failed due to his arrogance, then I thought to approach you in order to have parking space empty.

I request you to have a verbal communication which can be helpful to put the situation at ease. I hope to hear you back soon.

Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a suggestion is made. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation of why it bothers you is brief, and the suggestion is quite vague. While the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, the content lacks the necessary detail to fully develop the ideas. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the overall response feels a bit thin in terms of depth and specific detail regarding the impact of the parking issue.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as the use of 'Meanwhile' to start the second paragraph, which does not fit the context well. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, and the flow between ideas could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more varied and precise linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. There are several instances of awkward word choices or non-standard collocations, such as 'regards occupied parking lot', 'belonged parkade', and 'have parking space empty'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of sophisticated or varied vocabulary limits the score. The student attempts to use formal language, but the execution is inconsistent, leading to phrases that sound unnatural in a professional context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'their is a signed contract' (incorrect 'there'), 'which specify demand' (subject-verb agreement), and 'I had trie to explain' (spelling/tense error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the lack of commas in complex sentences. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band score.
