Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Devid,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to draw your attention as I have been struggling with parking problems since last one month.

Let me explain the situation. Even though the management has allotted the parking to the flat owners. When I come back from my workplace, i often unable to get my reserved space. This is because unauthorized people use this place. I called many time management regarding this issue, but they did not pay enough attention of this. Due to this problem, I have to park my car far away from home, which is quite difficult for me.

I request you to talk with building manager as he is your family friend, so may kind pay attention on this scenario. Furthermore, in my opinion, make a strict rule for the parking spot, which might be helpful to resolve this problem.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Divya Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining the impact on you, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that unauthorized people use the space, you could have elaborated slightly more on how this affects your daily routine or the specific nature of the inconvenience. The letter is clear and the purpose is well-defined, meeting the requirements for a formal complaint letter effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the situation from the proposed solution, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Due to this problem' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor errors in sentence structure, such as the fragment 'Even though the management has allotted the parking to the flat owners.' Connecting this to the next sentence would improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'draw your attention' and 'unauthorized people' are appropriate for the context. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'since last one month' (should be 'for the last month') and 'make a strict rule' (should be 'implement a strict rule'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band level. Using more precise verbs would enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'i often unable' (missing the verb 'am') and 'may kind pay attention' (should be 'kindly pay attention'). Additionally, there are punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' and the sentence fragment mentioned earlier. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear main verb.
