Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs. Sharma,
I am writing you this letter regarding the issue of a parking lot in our building.
I rented this apartment a couple of weeks ago and since then whenever I come back from work all the parking spaces are always full. I always have to wait for 30-40 minutes so that if someone goes outside only then I am able to park my car.
Honestly, it is a complete waste of time as I live alone here and I manage everything on my own. It is making more difficult for me to arrange my things as i do not get enough time for anything.
I would like to suggest you to allot a parking spaces to each member of the building and separate parking lots to the visitors with the limited time for parking. Along with this you can impose the signs for each parking lot so that people can use their own parking space and individuals like me do not have to wait for someone else to take out their car. I feel it would be more convenient to everyone lives in this building.
Waiting for immediate action.
yours sincerely,
jags k

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the situation clearly, explained the impact on your daily routine, and provided practical suggestions for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why it bothers you' section by providing a more specific example of how this impacts your work-life balance or stress levels, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated level of engagement with the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'since then', 'honestly', and 'along with this' to connect your ideas. However, the transition between the problem and the suggested solutions could be smoother. Some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure, and the use of paragraphing is functional but could be more distinct to separate the problem description from the proposed solutions. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'allot', 'convenient', and 'impose'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'impose the signs' (a more natural collocation would be 'install signage' or 'put up signs') and 'if someone goes outside' (which is a bit informal; 'vacates a space' would be more precise). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more specific collocations related to parking and housing would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing you this letter' (should be 'writing to you'), 'it is making more difficult' (missing 'it'), and 'convenient to everyone lives in this building' (should be 'everyone who lives'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. The majority of your sentences are understandable, and these errors do not impede communication.
