IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear landloard,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment and issues regarding parking.

I live in your building at 2nd floor since 3 months and I am facing parking challenges on daily basis. Whenever I come from office in evening, the parking is full and half of the cars parked belongs to visitors and not the residents. Due to this, I had to spent lot of time searching for a parking near the building and even sometimes I had to park my car in paid parking area. This is created a financial burden as well as mental stress after work.

I believe you should take strict action against this and should define a limited area for visitors and rest for residents of the building. This will prioritize residents instead of anyone parking in our areas.

I expect you will look into this matter immediately and will take suitable steps.

Regards,

Jas

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining the negative impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though they could be developed with slightly more detail to reach a higher band. For instance, explaining the specific nature of the 'strict action' or the 'limited area' would add depth. However, the response successfully fulfills the requirements of the task and maintains a consistent, clear position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Due to this,' 'Whenever,' and 'I believe' are used to connect ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the problem and the suggested solution could be slightly more sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear, making the letter easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. Phrases like 'financial burden,' 'mental stress,' and 'prioritize residents' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'landloard' (spelling) and 'I had to spent' (verb form). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and precise collocations. The current range is adequate for a General Training task, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I live in your building at 2nd floor since 3 months' (should be 'have been living... for 3 months') and 'This is created' (should be 'This has created'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control is inconsistent. Improving the accuracy of verb tenses and prepositions would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
