Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Sham,

The purpose of writing this letter to complain about the lack of parking space in the evenings.

Unfortunately, upon returning home it takes almost an hour to find the spot to park the car. Sometimes I have to park the car on the road side parking and for security reasons I believe that is not a good spot to park the car.

Besides the visitor parking on the far side of the apartments people those who visit park their cars on the reserved spots for the members of the community. With this hassle, there is a traffic congestions on the main door which is wastage of time.

To solve this problem, each parking spot should be given and allotted according to the number of apartment in the building which will help to solve this problem. Moreover, The strict rules for the visitors should be implemented.

I hope to hear from you soon regarding this raising problem in the building.

Yours faithfully,

Narveer Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining why it is problematic, and proposing a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'why it bothers you' section could be slightly more detailed to fully explore the impact on your daily life. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'Besides', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For example, the sentence 'With this hassle, there is a traffic congestions' is a bit abrupt. Improving the connection between your observations and the resulting frustration would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'reserved spots', 'community', and 'implemented'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'road side parking' instead of 'street parking' and 'raising problem' instead of 'rising' or 'ongoing problem'. While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your score. You have a sufficient range to convey your message clearly, but expanding your repertoire of formal expressions would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'people those who visit' (which is redundant) and 'there is a traffic congestions' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'the number of apartment' should be plural ('apartments'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and plurals. Your control of basic structures is good, but more attention to detail in complex sentences is needed.
