Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I am writing this to express my frustration regarding the parking issue which I face every day when I come home late. My name is Yash Patel. I am residing in Apartment 605 (B-wing).
Let me explain my situation. Since last month, I have come home late at night and not been able to find a spot to park my car. I have also tried to find a place in a different wing, but unfortunately, all were full. Moreover, my job is time-demanding as I am employed at a stock agency, so I don't have fixed working hours. At the end of the shift, I become exhausted plus this daily dilemma was making it worse.
Lastly, I would like to suggest that number all the spaces according to the residents. However, I have seen some unknown cars in our basement which is so unfair to us. So I suggest that you pi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. However, the response is incomplete as it cuts off abruptly at the end ('So I suggest that you pi'). Because the final suggestion is not fully articulated, the task is not entirely fulfilled. To reach a higher band, you must ensure the letter has a clear conclusion and a proper sign-off. The ideas are relevant, but the lack of a finished closing makes the communication incomplete.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Lastly' to link your ideas. However, the abrupt ending significantly disrupts the flow and coherence of the final paragraph. To improve, ensure that your ideas are fully developed within each paragraph and that you include a standard closing salutation, such as 'Yours sincerely,' to provide a sense of completion to the letter format.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using phrases like 'time-demanding', 'daily dilemma', and 'residing in'. These choices are appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'inconvenience' instead of 'dilemma' or 'allocate' instead of 'number'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, 'I am writing this to express my frustration regarding the parking issue which I face every day' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are minor issues, such as 'Since last month, I have come home late... and not been able to find', where the tense usage is slightly awkward. However, these errors do not impede communication. Focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses and ensuring your sentences are complete.
