Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Max,
I am one of the tenants living in your apartment building holding unit 304. As we all know that the building has a limited parking space at the back and most of the tenants own a car or two and find it very difficult to accommodate their vehicles.
I usually can't get a parking spot when I come back from work and I had to park my vehicle far away from the apartment building.
This makes me frustrate every time after a long day at work. Sometimes, when me and my wife come back from grocery shopping, we have to face the same situation and have to carry the heavy grocery by ourselves over a significant distance. Moreover, I cannot perform some general maintenance and checkup of my vehicle while being parked far away from the building.
My suggestion is that you should set up designated parking spaces for those who are willing to pay monthly rent on the top of their apartment rent. This might discourage tenants from having unnecessary vehicles and might help in keeping spaces open for those who truly need them.
Thank you and I am looking forward to your considerate actions towards this matter.
Regards,
James Bond

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact on your daily routine, and provide a practical, well-developed suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the specific mention of carrying groceries and the inability to perform vehicle maintenance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is grammatically sound, as the current structure is slightly awkward. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose and consistent tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover' and 'This makes me', to link ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid repetitive sentence structures, but overall, the information is presented in a coherent and easy-to-follow manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your points clearly. Phrases like 'accommodate their vehicles', 'general maintenance', and 'considerate actions' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'makes me frustrate' (should be 'frustrated') and 'on the top of' (should be 'in addition to' or 'on top of'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more precise collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the response further. The current range is functional and allows for clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'As we all know that the building has...' is a fragment/run-on issue, and 'when me and my wife come back' should be 'when my wife and I come back'. Additionally, 'I had to park' should be 'I have to park' to maintain consistent tense with the rest of the letter. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
