Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Tanner,

I am writing this letter to you to express my continous struggle to find a parking slot in the apartment building I live.

I rented apartment number 4 from you last year and there were no issue with the parking at that time. However, as new residents move in with more than one car per unit. It is becoming hard for me to find a parking slot for my car after I return from work.

In my lease argreement, there is a particular parking slot number is alocatted to my unit. Till now, I was using the same spot. Now the situaition is changed, I am not able to find single empty space by the end of the day, which is increasing my frustation and expenses as I have t opark in city lot and pay twenty dollar per night.

I will like to request your intervention in the issue. Either send polic a email to all the residents about this single car parking per unit or talk in person, whichever is feasible for you.

I am looking forward to hear from you regarding this matter and hoping for the postive response.

Yours faithfully,

Rajbir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the parking situation, explained the negative impact on your daily life and finances, and provided a clear suggestion for the landlord to resolve the issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the problem. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully integrated; for example, you mentioned a specific parking spot in your lease agreement, which is a strong detail that adds credibility to your complaint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific details and finally to the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, some cohesive devices are slightly mechanical or missing. For instance, the transition between the lease agreement and the current situation could be smoother. Using linking words like 'consequently' or 'furthermore' would improve the flow between sentences. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. You use topic-specific terms such as 'lease agreement', 'allocated', and 'intervention'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'continous', 'argreement', 'alocatted', 'situaition', 'frustation', 'polic') and minor word choice issues (e.g., 'city lot' instead of 'public parking lot'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading your work for spelling accuracy will significantly improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there were no issue' (should be 'issues'), 'as new residents move in... It is becoming' (fragmented sentence), and 'I will like to request' (should be 'I would like'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion for the reader. To improve, try to focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
