Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Ahmed,

I hope you are well and your family too? Its been over two years since i moved into your property located at 16b,Oslo avenue. I am writing to express my challenge with the parking situation in the building.

It is becoming difficult to get a parking spot in the apartment this days due to the way my neighbours park their car and it bothers me now that i had to park outside on the street for three nights in the past week.

Also, I would like to suggest a parking idea that will favor all the tenants in the house. For instance, people with idle cars should park at the right hand side of the car park and the rest of us can park horizontally and ensuring the people who leaves the house early parks at back to allow easy access without disturbing anyone in the early hours of the day.

I hope this arrangement works out for everyone and please do let me know what you think of my suggestion.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the parking situation, explained why it is a problem for you, and provided a specific suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To improve, you could expand slightly on the impact of the situation to show more depth in your explanation, as the current description is quite brief. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose and logical development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the situation, the impact, and your proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'For instance', and 'I hope' are used to guide the reader through your argument. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'property', 'arrangement', and 'access'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'parking idea' which could be more precise, and 'idle cars' which is understandable but slightly unnatural in this context. You generally communicate your meaning clearly without difficulty. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more specific collocations related to housing or parking, such as 'designated parking space' or 'inconvenience'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Its' instead of 'It's', 'i' instead of 'I', and 'this days' instead of 'these days'. Additionally, there are subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'people who leaves' instead of 'people who leave'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic punctuation and capitalization, and ensure that verbs agree with their subjects in complex sentences.
