Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear ABC,

I hope you are doing well. I writing to express my disappointment associated with parking availability at our residence. I am your tenant from 'Akruti Apartment', room number A78. Firstly, it has become quite difficult to find parking lots nowadays due to people form outside are illegally parking at our personal parking space. Eventually, it occupies a lot more space by visitors or outsiders during the whole day.

Secondly, it has created a significant inconvenience for several residents from our apartment. As when they come back from the work, it is very difficult to find parking. As a result, I have to pay extra for the parking at private parking available at front side.

Lastly, I would like you to take strict actions against this situation. It would be better if you could restrict some entries during a certain time period. Moreover, you could make a separate arrangement of parking for the visitors, which I believe would work better and solve the problem effectively.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to hearing form you soon.

Yours sincerely,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the parking situation, explained the negative impact on residents, and provided constructive suggestions for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the problem and the desired outcome. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for example, you could elaborate on how the 'strict actions' might be implemented, such as issuing parking permits or installing a gate, to further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. However, some of the cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the sentence 'As when they come back from the work', which is a fragment and disrupts the cohesion of the paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences are fully connected will help achieve a more natural flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inconvenience', 'residence', and 'consideration'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'parking lots' (which usually refers to the area, not the space itself) and 'people form outside' (a typo for 'from'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations related to parking and housing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I writing' (missing auxiliary verb), 'people form outside are illegally parking' (incorrect word order/preposition), and 'from the work' (unnecessary article). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Proofreading for basic verb tense consistency will also help increase your score.
