Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear smith,

Hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to bring your attention towards a problem which i am facing from last two weeks. Actually, i am living on second floor suite no 203. I have a hectic schedule due to which i come back home late night because i have to finish office work.

Currently, am facing parking issue, as you know it is so frustrating when you come back home and spent almost more than half hour to find a parking spot because somebody has parked in your assigned place. I got mentally depressed and was so aggressive which leads some family fight. It is my humble request to you just please put some boards at parking spots, put some notices, send emails so that residents use their own parking slots. It would be a great help for me.

I hope you understand my situation or consider my request.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, although it could be slightly more professional. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, meeting the requirements of the task. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the suggestions provided are practical and directly related to the problem described. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the prompt requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the introduction of the problem to the personal impact and finally the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'Currently', and 'It is my humble request' are used to link sentences, though the flow could be improved with more varied transition words. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the overall structure is coherent, making the writer's intent clear throughout the correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their situation clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'mentally depressed' and 'family fight', which are not the most precise collocations for the context. However, the range is sufficient to communicate the message without difficulty. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on using more precise vocabulary related to housing and formal complaints, and ensure that word choices are consistently appropriate for a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' second floor), incorrect verb tenses ('which i am facing from last two weeks'), and punctuation issues (capitalization of 'i'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. The writer demonstrates an attempt to use complex sentences, but control over these structures is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
