Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr Jackson,
I'm writing this letter to express my inconvenience with unwilling to find empty space for car parking.
I have been living in this apartment for the last five years. However, recently, I have come across numerous problems related to parking in our apartment. When I came back home from the office, I have to park my car on unfamiliar streets instead of parking area in our building, because it is always overcrowded with a lot of vehicles. It is more risky and unsafe to park the car. Also, it is really arduous for me to walk a long distance and find empty area for parking, therefore, I feel more frustrated and tired over time.
I will appreciate it if you could arrange formal meeting with the tenants of our building and present proposal regarding extending parking area by covering unused space on ground floor. Additionally, imposing strict regulations on outsiders to restrict them to park their vehicles. Please let me know regarding your time for in-person meeting soon. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the parking situation, explained why it is problematic (safety and physical exhaustion), and provided two clear suggestions for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence is grammatically accurate, as 'inconvenience with unwilling to find' is unclear. While the ideas are relevant and well-developed, the expression of these ideas could be more precise to ensure the reader fully understands the urgency of the situation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solutions. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For example, the connection between the parking issue and the request for a meeting could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'arduous', 'imposing strict regulations', and 'in-person meeting' are appropriate for this formal context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'inconvenience with unwilling to find', which is not idiomatic. Additionally, 'proposal regarding extending' would be better phrased as 'a proposal to extend'. While there are occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is varied enough to communicate your points effectively without causing confusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'When I came back home... I have to park' (tense inconsistency) and 'restrict them to park' (should be 'restrict them from parking'). Some phrasing is awkward, such as 'I'm writing this letter to express my inconvenience with unwilling to find'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, especially when describing recurring past and present situations.
