Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Landlord,

I am writing to inform you about a problem of parking space in our apartment building. I have found it very difficult to get a parking space in the back parking lot when I return home from work. Many times all parking spaces are occupied and I have to park my car on street.

This situation cause me a lot of problem because I usually come home after a night shift and I need a safe place to park my car. If I don't get a parking space I need to park my car on street and before 3 hours I need to come again to park my car in side parking lot because of the only 3 hours street parking rule of kitchener city. This situation is causing me a lot of inconvenience.

I would like to suggest that you assign specific parking space to each apartment or provide a separate parking for visitors. I believe this solution will make parking more organizied and fair for every apartment residents.

Your Sincerely,

Keyur Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the parking situation, explained the personal inconvenience caused by the night shift and local parking regulations, and provided two logical suggestions for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the situation, perhaps by mentioning how it affects your punctuality or stress levels, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into three clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'If I don't get' and 'I believe this solution', though the range of linking words is somewhat limited. To improve, try incorporating a wider variety of cohesive devices like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this' to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'inform', 'occupied', 'inconvenience', and 'organized'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'problem of parking space' (should be 'parking problem' or 'lack of parking spaces') and 'in side parking lot' (should be 'inside the parking lot'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'This situation cause me' (should be 'causes'), 'park my car on street' (should be 'on the street'), and 'before 3 hours' (should be 'within 3 hours'). Additionally, 'Your Sincerely' is incorrect; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
