Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Parker,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my concern regarding the parking space. It is difficult to find a parking spot because it is usually occupied.
I have been living in your apartment, and it was confirmed that I can park my car in the parking lot behind the apartment. When I come home after work, it is hard to find a parking spot.
I have to stay in the car until a spot is free. If I parked the car in the street, I would get a ticket from the city council. It not only wastes my time, but also gives me unnecessary stress. I have to face this problem almost every day.
I would like to suggest that the parking lot could be extended, so that residents would not face parking issues. One parking space should be permitted for each resident.
I look forward to hearing your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Rajbeer Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact on your daily routine, and provide a logical suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details, such as how often the lot is full or the specific times you return home, to further develop your ideas and make the situation more vivid for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'because', 'when', and 'if', which function well. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') to create a smoother flow between your sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'express my concern', 'unnecessary stress', and 'prompt response' are appropriate for a formal letter. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the use of 'parking spot' and 'parking lot'. To achieve a higher score, try to use more varied synonyms or collocations to describe the situation, such as 'designated parking area', 'limited availability', or 'inconvenience'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures and maintain consistent accuracy throughout the letter. The use of the conditional structure 'If I parked... I would get...' is a good attempt at a more complex grammatical form. While there are no major errors that impede communication, the range of structures is somewhat limited to simple and compound sentences. Incorporating more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, would help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
