Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the parking facility that you provided for tenants but I do not find suitable space for my vehicle most of the time.

Firstly, I have been living in this apartment for 2 years as a tenant. There is a parking lot in the back of the building which is allowed by you to use, unfortunately I did not get enough space to park my car.

Moreover, I always noticed that the place remains busy with unknown person's vehicles. Owing to this problem, I have to park my own vehicle in the street parking even once I got the ticket for not parking in accurate place.

Lastly, I would like draw your attention on this issue so that you could provide me a quick solution as soon as possible.

I look forward for your prompt response.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, though it could be more polite and professional. To improve, you should expand on the consequences of the parking issue and provide more specific details regarding the suggested solution to ensure the task is fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to signal the progression of ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the connection between the problem and the suggested solution could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels a bit disjointed due to the brevity of the paragraphs. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'parking facility that you provided' and 'unknown person's vehicles' are functional but basic. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'allowed by you to use' (which is awkward) and 'accurate place' (which should be 'designated space'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to property management and parking, such as 'unauthorised vehicles' or 'parking permit system'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I did not get enough space' (should be 'I am unable to find' or 'there is insufficient space') and 'I would like draw your attention' (missing 'to'). Additionally, 'even once I got the ticket' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage to improve your score.
